Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has filed legislation that would provide an early retirement incentive to state employees classified in Group 1 of the retirement system.

Under the proposed legislation, eligible employees would be allowed to enhance their pension benefit by adding a combination of up to five years to their years of service or their age.

Workers must be an employee of an executive department as defined by Section 2 of Chapter 6A of the general laws. Public higher education employees are NOT eligible under the proposed law.

Eligible employees must apply for retirement on or after April 6, 2015 and not later than May 29, 2015, The requested retirement date must be on or before June 30, 2015.

AFSCME members are encouraged to read the Baker Administration's summary of the proposed law, to determine if they meet all eligibility requirements including minimum age and/or years of service.

It is important to note that this proposed legislation must be voted on and passed by the state legislature. AFSCME members should be aware that the legislature could make changes to the legislation including changes to eligibility requirements. Any changes to the proposed law that may occur will be posted on this website.
