The FY2016 budget proposed by the Massachusetts House of Representatives includes a provision that could spell the beginning of the end for a law that protects taxpayers and Massachusetts state and higher education workers from faulty privatization proposals.

State Representatives will debate and vote on the proposed House FY2016 budget next week. Council 93 is grateful to members of the House who are working closely with us to: oppose privatization; protect the essential services our members provide; and fight to reverse the trend of shifting GIC health insurance costs onto state and higher education workers.

Like legislation passed by the House on March 25, the Senate bill would allow eligible workers to add five years to their age, years of service, or a combination thereof. In an effort to entice workers who are already eligible for the maximum pension benefit, the Senate bill would also allow for one-time incentive payments to workers who agree to retire. The House bill includes no such provisions.
