Record-Breaking Year for Council 93 Memorial Scholarship Fund 10/21/2014

With more than two months remaining in 2014, our union has already shattered the annual fundraising record for the Council 93 Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Three major events led to the record-breaking year.  In August, 144 golfers hit the Olde Scotland Links in East Bridgewater, MA for 18 challenging holes of golf, some fantastic food, and a chance to win a number of great prizes.  The golfers’ contributions, combined with the generosity of dozens of sponsors and benefactors, brought in more than $26,000 for the fund in one day alone.

One month later, delegates, alternates, staff and other attendees at the 2014 Legislative Conference in Danvers, MA donated thousands of dollars towards raffles, pushing the total revenue for the year to $37,000. This past weekend, we topped the $40,000 mark with money raised at the Council’s Annual Softball Tournament and Family Fun Day in Milton, MA.

Awarded in memory of all of our departed members, the Council 93 Memorial Scholarship Fund provides a $1,000 scholarship for a student enrolled in a two-year or four-year accredited college. The scholarship is renewed for each year of attendance.  Council 93 members, spouses, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and legal dependents are eligible to apply.

This year’s scholarship winner is Joseph Desjarlais, The son of Local 1067 member Dara Semprucci, Joseph is a graduate of Blue Hills Regional Technical School and is currently attending Salem State University. Joseph and his mom accepted the award from Council 93 President Charlie Owen and Executive Board Christopher "Tiger" Stockbridge during the 2014 Legislative Conference in Danvers.

The leadership of Council 93 thanks the Scholarship Committee and the many staff and member volunteers who worked so hard to make 2014 a tremendous year for our fund.
