AFSCME Golfers Play Through Record Heat to Support Botelho Scholarship Fund 07/28/2011

More than eighty members, staff and friends of AFSCME Council 93 turned out at the Mount Hood Golf Course recently for a tournament to raise money for the union’s M. Michael Botelho Scholarship Fund.

Despite blazing sun and record high temperatures that reached as high as 103 degrees, the 5th Annual Tournament drew a record 72 golfers all of whom enjoyed a great day on the picturesque 18-hole course in Melrose, MA.

The July 22, “best ball” tournament featured longest drive and closest to the pin competitions as well as a 50/50 raffle option for players who were confident they could land their drive on the 10th hole green.

Following the tournament, everyone enjoyed a luncheon and raffle for donated sports memorabilia and other great prizes.

According to Council 93 Executive Vice President Charlie Owen, the event raised nearly $7,000, bringing the five-year tournament total to well over $25,000.

Owen, the lead organizer of the event, acknowledged the efforts of Council 93’s Dianne Hurley and Mark Bernard who he said were “instrumental in making the tournament such a great success.”  Owen also thanked the numerous AFSCME locals who contributed by way of sponsorships and donations as well as volunteers including Council 93’s Linda Corcoran who photographed the event.

Named in honor of Council 93’s first Field Services Director, the Botelho Scholarship fund provides assistance to Council 93 members, their spouses, children, grandchildren and legal dependents.
